Dr Esther Smits joined RECOVER in 2018 as a postdoctoral research fellow. She has a background in human movement and health sciences with experience in quantitative movement analysis and ambulatory monitoring methods. She is interested in using these methods to better understand how people recover from road traffic accidents and return to pre-injury functioning, and improve related health care services and treatment programs.

In her previous position at the CCRE Spine at The University of Queensland, she managed a longitudinal project regarding physical activity, sleep and lower back pain. Prior to working at the CCRE Spine, Esther completed her PhD project on the development and validation of a newly engineered medical device to aid in diagnosing and monitoring neurological movement disorders.

She received her PhD in 2016 from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
