Background

This project involves a feasibility trial of the Metacognition and Social Participation intervention (IMPACT) to individuals with cognitive- communication disorders following traumatic brain injury in their homes via telerehabilitation. If the trial is successful the data will be used to support development of a grant application for a large clinical trial involving multi-site recruitment of participants from a wider catchment area e.g. regional areas and other Australian states.

Aims

  • To determine the feasibility and efficacy of delivering an Invention for Metacognition and Social Participation (IMPACT) to individuals with cognitive- communication disorders following traumatic brain injury in their homes via telerehabilitation.
  • To determine participant and clinical satisfaction with the online mode of service delivery.

Consumer engagement

Input from people with acquired brain injury and their significant others/carers was sought regarding the treatment protocol and its benefits and challenges, and possible solutions to these challenges.

Input was sought from speech pathologists involved in the delivery of the intervention regarding adaptations required to deliver the intervention on- line. Clinician satisfaction and comments post-intervention informed modifications to the protocol in preparation for a larger trial.

Dissemination

  • Preliminary results were presented at the ASSBI/NZRA Trans-Tasman Conference in Wellington, NZ, 4 May 2019, and at the Speech Pathology Australia Conference, 2-5 June 2019.
  • A NHMRC Ideas Grant (IMPACT: An innovative new way of treating cognitive-communication disorders following acquired brain injury – Copley, Copley, Fleming, Theodoros, Togher,  Finch, Cornwell) was submitted in the 2019 round.

Who benefits from this research?

The consumers (or end-users) of the research findings include people with acquired brain injury, speech pathologists, and other health professionals working in the acquired brain injury area.
