What's Involved?

The course will run over four weeks and involves weekly 2-hour interactive practical training sessions. The sessions will be delivered via Zoom and focus on the stress inoculation component of the StressModex treatment.

The sessions will include:

  • Overview of the evidence and the effects of stress on pain
  • Engaging injured people in the intervention and developing a strong therapeutic relationship
  • Teaching injured people techniques to manage stress, including relaxation strategies, problem solving skills, addressing unhelpful thoughts
  • Applying skills in the real world

They will be delivered by clinical psychologist Dr Rachel Elphinston and musculoskeletal physiotherapist Professor Michele Sterling.

The sessions will be of interest to physiotherapists and other health care professionals (e.g., occupational therapists, psychologists, general practitioners) who are involved in the care of people following injury.

Cost: $200 for all 4 sessions, plus Eventbrite admin fee. All proceeds will go to further injury research.

Professional Development Opportunity

RECOVER Injury Research Centre in collaboration with the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) in Recovery Following Road Traffic Injuries are offering training in the StressModex intervention. The StressModex clinical trial integrated stress inoculation training with exercise for people with acute whiplash injury. The integrated treatment, delivered by physiotherapists, resulted in beneficial effects on pain related disability.
