Choosing the motorised wheelchair that suits your environment and lifestyle is a huge decision with implications for rehabilitation and long-term wellbeing. However, most motorised wheelchair users don’t get the opportunity to test-drive multiple types of wheelchairs. The Virtual Reality (VR) Wheelchair project is developing a prototype simulation that will help people in rehabilitation wards make an informed choice about the best motorised wheelchair for their environment and lifestyle. The simulation will also enable people to begin training without needing to transfer out of bed. The co-design project is led by consumer and wheelchair user John Hitchens and RECOVER’s Dr Robert Cuthbert.

The Virtual Reality Wheelchair project team are in the top 10 in their category, and are now in the running for the people’s choice awards. The team's entry highlights the benefits of consumer involvement from the earliest stages of this consumer-conceived, consumer-led, co-design project.
